What Aimless does
Aimless builds a circular driving route that starts and ends where you are. You choose roughly how long you want to be out — one hour, ninety minutes, or two — and it hands you three loops. Pick one and it opens in Google Maps with turn-by-turn navigation.
It exists for one specific annoyance: you drive with no destination, get too far out, and the way home is dead time retracing roads you just covered.
Common questions
Why does it need my location?
The loop starts and ends where you are, so it needs a starting point. Aimless asks for location only while you are using it, and the coordinate is used to request a route and nothing else. It is never stored or transmitted anywhere beyond the routing request.
It says Precise Location is off
With Precise Location turned off, iOS reports an approximate position that can be off by kilometres — far enough that the loop would start somewhere you are not. Rather than hand you a route from the wrong place, Aimless asks you to turn it on: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Aimless → Precise Location.
It is stuck on "Finding you…"
That means iOS has not returned a location fix yet. Indoors, in a garage, or on a cold start it can take a moment or fail outright. Tap Try Again, or step somewhere with a clearer view of the sky.
It could not build any loops
Routes come from a road network that covers public roads worldwide, but some starting points genuinely have nowhere to loop — a peninsula tip, an island, or a spot with water on three sides. Moving a short distance and trying again usually works.
It says to wait a moment and try again
Aimless shares a routing service with every other copy of the app, and that service limits how many routes can be requested per minute. Generating several times in quick succession can reach that limit. Waiting a minute clears it.
The drive took longer than the app said
Times are estimates from the routing engine and do not account for traffic, lights, or how you actually drive. Treat them as approximate.
Privacy
Aimless collects nothing. There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and no advertising. Your location is used to build a route and is not stored or shared. The full policy is in PRIVACY.md.
